There are many species of bacteria that love growing in oil production environment.
Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRB) and Thiosulfate Reducing Bacteria (TRB) are the main encountered ones.
They live by consuming the oxygen from sulphates and rejecting H2S, creating acidic and corrosive media.
Once the bacteria are in the network, they can establish a biofilm in a few days that starts corroding steel walls.
We call this phenomenon "micro biologically induced corrosion" (M-I-C).
Chemical kits can be used to detect them and the use of biocide are necessary to get rid of them.
Keep in mind they are usually introduced in the network or reservoir by the human activity: dirty water for drilling, workover or hydrotest.
